LETTER FROM SUPERINTENDENT COREY WILSON
Dear BREC families,
As we eagerly await the arrival of summer, we are thrilled to share our plans for BREC’s 2024 award-winning summer camps. Building upon the success of last year, we are creating an enriching experience for your children that will be filled with adventure, learning and lasting memories.
One of the highlights is our continued commitment to convenience. That’s why we are offering bus service for select camps again this year. Additionally, we are introducing a new leadership program specifically tailored for teens, providing valuable career training opportunities. Our scholarship program remains in place to ensure every child can experience camp.
Camp BREC Community Recreation camps offer themed weeks conveniently located at recreation centers across the parish. Designed to allow your child to spend the entire summer at one location without growing bored of the same experiences, these camps offer a diverse range of activities and field trips. Our specialty camps cater to the interests of budding athletes, zookeepers, swamp visitors, artists, nature explorers, adventurers, horse lovers, astronomers, actors, and historians.
For campers with intellectual and developmental disabilities, we are proud to continue offering Camp Sunshine at three locations. This inclusive initiative reflects our commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all.
Mark your calendars for registration on March 2 and use this handy guide to plan a summer full of fun, learning and memories for children across the parish. We are
excited to announce that BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo will double the number of spaces at Zoo Camp this summer, where we will provide an immersive wildlife experience in our brand-new entry building!
Beyond summer camps, 2024 will hold numerous celebrations of transformative projects across the parish. From the newly renovated Zoo and Greenwood Community Park to the Nature Station at Frenchtown Conservation Area, the first phase of the Lakes Project, the state-of-the-art recreation center and swimming pool at Howell Community Park and much more. We are proud of these major accomplishments as the Imagine Your Parks 2 strategic plan is nearing an end. We will also unveil the completed Imagine Your Parks 3 systemwide master plan this year, which will guide the next decade of progress across the BREC system.
Summer is our busiest season, and BREC’s popular splash pads and Liberty Lagoon Water Park will be filled with families cooling off during the summer heat, golf courses serving a record number of players, dog parks giving our furry friends a place to exercise, and parks across the parish hosting picnics, fishing, kayaking, jogging, bicycling, and walking. Visit brec.org to learn how you can celebrate and enjoy the summer in your own hometown.
No matter how you choose to enjoy your parks, you can be sure that we are working diligently to ensure that the summer of 2024 will be a memorable one. Thank you for being part of the BREC family as we look forward to creating amazing experiences this summer.
