 LETTER FROM SUPERINTENDENT COREY WILSON
   Dear BREC Families,
Just like yours, my family is starting to think about summer and which camps and activities will give our daughter a memorable and safe summer. At BREC, we know it is hard for busy families to plan this far in advance and that is why we have created this handy guide which includes information about every
BREC camp, aquatics programs, and other fun, summer activities and events. For your convenience, we have also included notes sections where you can write out your camp plans so that they are at your fingertips when registration begins on March 21, or you can list all of the events and activities you would like to experience this summer.
BREC offers award-winning camps for children who love sports, history, art, acting, wild animals, the stars, the outdoors, horseback riding and fun field trips. You’ll also find camps designed especially for children with disabilities, but all BREC camps welcome anyone, regardless of ability. This year, we are expanding our counselor-in-training program which teaches teens how to become summer camp counselors so that when they turn 18, they are ready to join the BREC team. We offer another program designed to help teens explore different career paths so they can discover one that is right for them. You’ll also find one-day golf camps for aspiring golfers of all ages, females and even whole families as well as a day-long art retreat for a quick summer staycation.
Our 2020 summer events and activities will include the popular BREC-on-the-Geaux mobile playground trucks taking structured, fun activities across East Baton Rouge
Parish every weekday so that children not enrolled in camp will still have the opportunity to go outdoors and get some much needed exercise. New events and programs include Kayaks and Coffee, boat rentals at Wampold Park, a Hero Appreciation Day at Liberty Lagoon for first responders as well as junior lifeguard training.
This year, BREC will again offer free swimming lessons for children and adults as well as free swim at our swimming pools. You can even join me as I celebrate the beginning of swim season by jumping into the water at Liberty Lagoon on opening day! We will also celebrate the opening of three recreation centers that were set to be renovated before the Flood of 2016 devastated our community and are excited to once again host summer camps at Church Street, Forest Community, and Lovett Road Parks. We encourage you to visit the parks and check out the expanded, updated, and air-conditioned buildings. As always, we have more than a dozen construction projects underway and even more in the design and planning phases as we continue to keep our promises to you to make the Imagine Your Parks 2 strategic plan a reality. Follow us on Facebook to learn when new spaces and renovated facilities are completed and join us at our ribbon-cutting celebrations.
None of this would possible without your support of BREC. I thank you for that and invite you to utilize your nationally acclaimed, award winning park system and make this a summer to remember for your family and friends,
Corey K. Wilson, BREC Superintendent
